Keenjhar Lake is also popular to be known as Kalri Lake. This is situated in District of Thatta, Sindh. This lake is located about 122 km from Karachi. The lake extends to about 24 km and is 6 km broad. It is approximately 26 feet deep. The Indus River runs equidistant to the lake. Keenjhar Lake is one of the greatest fresh water lakes in Pakistan.
Actually, Kalri Lake is formed by the unification of two lakes i.e. Sonehri and Kheenjhar. The motive behind this unification is to provide fresh and clean water to the individuals of Karachi and Thatta. It is predicted an extremely significant area for wildlife species. It is a perfect place for habitat of winter birds such as geese, cormorants, gulls, duck, flamingos and coots etc.
It is a place favorable for tourists’ attraction. Majority people daily visit here from Karachi, Thatta and Hyderabad. It is known to be a great inspiration for folk poets. This place was appreciated by Shah Abdul Latif Bhattayi in his poetry.
Noori Jam Tamachi, the popular folklore of Sindh is belonged to this place. He was married to a beautiful fisher girl Noori. There is tomb in the middle of the lake known as Noori’s Tomb. It is a popular spot and can be visualized from the shore. This shrine is visited by hundreds of people daily. Another folklore story of Sonehri and Jhum Pir, the fairy and the prince, is also associated to this lake.
It is a perfect place for family picnics and hangouts of friends. Noori Restaurant is also established for the visitors near the lake’s shore. People from all around the world come to visit this tremendous place.
