Garhi Yasin: The Prominent Taluka of Shikarpur, Sindh

Garhi Yasin (Urdu: گڑھی ياسين‎) is a famous town and taluka of the District Shikarpur in the province of Sindh, Pakistan.

One of the 4 talukas (sub-districts) of the Shikarpur city, Garhi Yasin is of remarkable political and historical importance to Pakistan. On the day of 1 June 1977, the ancient Shikarpur subdivision, containing the 2 talukas of Shikarpur and Garhi Yasin, was separated from the place of Sukkur District, and a latest District Shikarpur was made and attached to Larkana Division.

Garhi Yasin is a town situated in the north of Sindh province of Pakistan. It is the 2nd greatest town of the district Shikarpur, having population of more than 14,000. Garhi Yasin is located on the right bank of River Indus. Garhi Yasin town has always been a significant place due to the proximity with the Shikarpur, an area that commanded the trade route via the Bolan Pass, and its merchants had dealings with several towns in the region of Central Asia.

Garhi Yasin taluka contains 2 primary towns Dakhan,Madeji and few main villages Haji Rohelo Khan Jaffri, and Bado. Garhi Yasin has generated outstanding Politicians, Civil Servants, such as Agha Siraj Khan Durrani the Speaker of Sindh assembly and Agha Rafique Khan Durrani ex-chief justice of sharia law and Chairman of SPSC. The place is named after its founder Yasin Khan Pathan. Sindhi is the common language of the inhabitants in this region. The Jaffri,Mughal, Kalhora, Seelro, Chandio, Memon,Wadhio, Soomra, Shaikh, khakhrani, Syed, Mirani, Qazi, Bhutta,Lashari, Bhatti, Mahar, Jakhro, Kakepota, Mangi, , Arain, and Bhayo Tribe etc are the popular castes in this region. The Durrani tribe is believed to be one of the strongest both politically and by land. After the emergence from British India, several Hindu and Sikh clans shifted to India. Some Hindus also got settled in this region.

Education in Garhi Yasin

The place has a Higher Secondary School Agha Badaruddin Khan Durrani and 3 High Schools, numerous primary schools, a Mono Technique School and a vocational School. (Like typing, commercial, computer etc.).


A major part of the place is irrigated. Huge productions of the place are rice, wheat and pulses beside sugarcane, Maize, vegetables fruits etc.


It has a very small market and manufactures of metal ware, handicrafts, bricks, furniture, and pottery. Hand-loom weaving of this area was used to be very famous. Rilly of this region is very notable in all over Sindh and making a good variety of Sindhi topi and Balochi Rilly in several designs and models.


It is primarily alluvial plain. The lands are highly suffered after the construction of barrage at the place of Sukkur and being rapidly changed into salt lands. Water logging and salinity is major issue of Garhi Yasin.
